Saint Nicolai Church
For the town of Perleberg, we were honored to cast a model of St Nicolai's Church, which burnt down in 1632, for the design of public spaces. It was designed by Bernd Streiter and can now be seen on the eponymous St Nicolai Square.
In Perleberg, the bronze model of the historic St Nicholas' Church, which once stood next to today's St Jacob's Church and no longer exists, was unveiled. Our team at the Kunstgießerei is proud to use our expertise to realise the vision of artist Bernd Streiter and produce the model in detailed bronze.
Our work began with the 3D design of the model by Peter Barczewski, who created the basis for the bronze casting. Using our experience as craftsmen and modern casting techniques, we realised the model down to the smallest detail, so that it brings the historic church back to life as a realistic replica. In addition to the church building itself, the history of the building is also recorded on a bronze plaque on the model: from its construction around 1300, through the challenges posed by the soft foundations, to the lightning strike that damaged the spire in 1632 and its demolition around 1770.
The Perleberg Citizens' Association financed the project, which was realised thanks to our foundry and the commitment of many partners. In a symbolic moment, excavation manager Thomas Hauptmann explained that the bronze model was the ‘resurrection of the Nicolai Church after more than 300 years’ - an honour that we as an art foundry were able to help shape with our work.
